Secret Love: A Tribute to
Doris Day
The New York Times called Karen
Oberlin's hit tribute to the great Doris Day "widely admired" and
called her "a jazzier inheritor of Doris Day's impeccable pop style."
Without any impersonation, Oberlin has often been compared to
Ms. Day in her work as a vocalist, and Oberlin couldn't be
happier: "Doris Day one
of our greatest artists, and although she is truly American, like apple pie and
jazz, she reaches the hearts and minds of people all over the world," says
Oberlin. Called "thrilling" by Rex Reed in the New
York Observer, she has been hailed by the New York Times as one of the
premier interpreters of the Great American Songbook and she has toured
worldwide. Oberlin has been the recipient of Nightlife, MAC and Bistro
Awards and she is a recording artist with three CD's (including "Secret
Love: The Music of Doris Day") with a fourth due in 2013. Fresh from her
weeklong engagement at London's newest cabaret club, this show was a sold out, smash-hit. The song list includes beloved
favorites such as "Que Sera, Sera," "Sentimental Journey,"
and of course the title song, "Secret Love" but also includes many
rare, poignant songs that show the many sides of this intriguing icon. In this
exciting show, she delves deeply into the life and music of this intriguing and
important cultural phenomenon -- from having a baby as a teenager, touring with
a big band, to her tumultuous marriages and becoming the highest paid woman in
Hollywood history while recording sensational songs throughout her varied
career.
Other press quotes from this show:
“Ms. Oberlin’s beautifully shaped reading in the classic
pop tradition was one that Ms. Day in her prime might well have envied.”
-- Stephen Holden, THE NEW YORK TIMES
"Oberlin’s
version of ‘Secret love’ is one of the best versions ever... By the time (she)
has completed her act she has certainly achieved her goal “to honour Day’s
spirit and her complexity as an artist”, and also prove herself a champion of
popular song."

"Warm intimacy, pitch perfect, funny,
poignant, mellow, sexy and spirited (with) a sophisticated sense of phrasing...
Her voice soared, rangy and velvety... In a one-night only show at the Iridium,
Karen Oberlin reprised her Doris Day tribute with mature,
ebullient, confident Oberlin jazz savvy." -- Elizabeth Ahlfors,
