About Arthur Shafman

ARTHUR SHAFMAN, president of Arthur Shafman International Ltd., has been involved in the entertainment industry for 38 years. A native New Yorker, his Association with the concert world began when he presented the legendary director TYRONE GUTHRIE in his first public lecture at New York’s Town Hall. He subsequently presented JOSE MOLINA BAILES ESPANOLES there in 1967 and in 1969 began the management of JOSE MOLINA’S career which he guided into becoming one of the major dance attractions touring over a 27 year span of time.

As a concert producer he has as also presented among others the Carnegie Hall debuts of RED SKELTON, BURL IVES and IVAN REBROFF, HILDEGARDE’S 80th Birthday Concert and ANNA RUSSELL’S Carnegie Hall Farewell Concert. A penchant for travel enabled him to discover new talent. It was on a trip to Switzerland that he attended a MUMMENSCHANZ performance in Zurich. By evening’s end, arrangements had been made for the MUMMENSCHANZ North American Debut Tour in the Fall of 1973 and subsequent annual tours leading up to the record breaking 3-1/2 year (1326 performances) Broadway run of the original MUMMENSCHANZ, the 14th longest Broadway run in theatrical history. Other productions produced include MARTHA SCHLAMME and ALVIN EPSTEIN in A KURT WEILL CABARET, the "Tony" nominated musical SHAKESPEARE’S CABARET, the Outer Critics Circle nominee COMPAGNIE PHILIPPE GENTY, INSIDEOUTSIDEANDALLAROUND SHELLEY BERMAN, LES COLOMBIAONI and IVAN REBROFF on BROADWAY.

He was the exclusive producer/manager of the BIJOU THEATRE, on West 45th Street for a five year period prior to its demolition to make way for the Marriott Marquis Hotel. Off Broadway he produced "THE ELOCUTION OF BENJAMIN", winner of three "Obie Awards for Best Play, Best Actor and Best Director." He also produced the San Francisco engagement, which won a Best Actor Award for its star GORDON CHATER. He also co-produced SANDRA REAVES-PHILLIPS in THE LATE GREAT LADIES OF BLUES & JAZZ, which continues to tour nationally and internationally at this time. He produced MUMMENSCHANZ in extended engagements in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kansas City, and Washington D.C. As a concert manager he has guided the careers and/or coordinated tours for SANDRA REAVES-PHILLIPS in THE LATE GREAT LADIES OF BLUES and JAZZ, IMAGO THEATRE'S productions of FROGZ  and BIGLITTLETHINGS, MARK NADLER, KT SULLIVAN, ANDREA MARCOVICCI, , CHRISTINE ANDREAS,  ROBERT SHIELDS, RED SKELTON, BURL IVES, SHIELDS & YARNELL, MUMMENSCHANZ, MICHAEL FEINSTEIN, ANNA RUSSELL, KIBBUTZ CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY,BALLET , COMPAGNIE PHILLIPE GENTY, MICHAEL MOSCHEN, BOB BERKY and FRED GARBO (The original FOOLSFIRE COMPANY), The SHIRELLES, THEATRE FANTASTIQUE, IVAN REBROFF and the late MARTHA SCHLAMME among others.
